H. 78 cm. Private collection, Germany The body opening of this instrument is at the rear in this example so not to interfere with the instrument's anthropomorphic appearance. The opening of the peg box can be closed with a carved plait of hair. The finial bears four figures and carved tassel-like elements and is supported above the peg box on a single strut. The eyes are set with brass and aluminum and an old repair is visible in the face. An almost identical twin piece resides in the National Museum, New Delhi. In that example, however, the head is more oval and the finial has five figures. |
